His Holiness Ignatius Zakka I Iwas
Patriarch of Antioch
The Incarnation and Redemption are the heart of God’s economy of salvation. In light of the centrality of these doctrines to the Christian Faith, the believers in the Lord Jesus Christ have always confessed their belief in Him as God Incarnate and the Savior of the whole world, being ready even to shed their blood for their Faith. As early Christian writers began to expound upon this rich Faith, many heretical ideas began to plague the Church, including Arianism, which led to the first Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, as well as Nestorianism, which set in motion a long history leading to and well beyond the Council of Chalcedon.
In this essay, presented at a theological conference in 1959, His Holiness Ignatius Zakka I Iwas draws from both primary and secondary sources to present an abridged summary of the events of the Second Council of Ephesus and the deviations, injustices, and real Christological issues of the Council of Chalcedon, all of which, since its convocation, have rendered it entirely unacceptable to the non-Chalcedonian Orthodox Churches.
