His Eminence Metropolitan Kyrillos of Milan was born Halim Nashed Athanasius on October 15, 1952, one of nine brothers, among whom were Bishop Botros of Shibin El Qanater, in Qalyubia, Egypt, and the renowned sculptor Sabry Nashed Athanasius. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Minya University in 1977. While in Minya, Egypt, he entered into the service under the guidance of His Eminence Metropolitan Arsenius of Minya and Abu Qurqas, to whom he would become a lifelong faithful disciple. On June 11, 1979, he entered into the monastic life at Deir Al-Baramous in Wadi al-Natrun, where he received the name Fr. Kyrillos. On June 22, 1986, Fr. Kyrillos was ordained a General Bishop for the Diocese of Minya. Shortly thereafter, in 1990, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III sent His Grace Bishop Kyrillos to oversee the Coptic Monastery in Milan, Italy. His Grace was involved in several committees of the Holy Synod, and was an active author for the El-Keraza Magazine. After the repose of His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, one of the first appointments made by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II following his enthronement was on December 28, 2012, where Bishop Kyrillos was appointed the papal deputy for all of Europe. On February 28, 2016, he received the rank of Metropolitan. His Eminence Metropolitan Kyrillos of Milan departed suddenly in his cell on the morning of August 14, 2017. He is remembered by countless faithful throughout Egypt, Europe, and North America as a deeply loving father, gentle and humble leader, and beacon of spirituality, beloved by both the young and old, and even those outside of the Coptic Orthodox tradition.
